Public Safety

Pipelines are the safest method of transporting large volumes of natural gas throughout North America everyday. To keep our system safe, ATCO Pipelines rely on our customers and contractors to act as our partners in safety.

Our extensive network of pipe, meter and compressor stations transport sweet, non-toxic natural gas. Our pipelines operate at a high pressure and range in diameter from four to 48 inches. The natural gas we transport is colourless, odourless and will travel into the atmosphere because it's lighter than air. However, it is flammable and can be explosive if allowed to collect in an enclosed space.

Because pipelines are located in urban as well as in wilderness and rural settings, they may be located very close to human activity. Pipeline operators take every precaution to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operations, but it is important that everyone is aware of pipeline locations and pipeline safety.

Alberta One-Call Pipeline Locates

Alberta One-Call is an organization primarily concerned with safety. Private homeowners, public contractors and anyone disturbing the ground should use their service to locate buried utility lines in order to reduce the risk of personal injury and property damage.

ATCO Pipelines is a member of the Alberta One-Call network so we can mitigate the risk of damage to our facilities, service disruption, environmental contamination, loss of product and potential disaster by being a member of the Alberta One-Call organization. We strive to ensure anyone excavating near pipelines knows the precautions to take before beginning their work and also how to recognize a pipeline leak and the measures to be taken if one occurs.

As part of our commitment to ensuring safe excavations near our pipelines locates are provided free of charge to the excavating community. If you are working near or crossing an ATCO Pipelines facility an agreement will be required which is also provided for free. A representative of ATCO Pipelines will be on-site during the ground disturbance activity to help insure the work can take place safely.
