System & Pipeline Integrity

ATCO Pipelines prides itself on having an outstanding pipeline safety record and quality policy. Pipeline and Measurement Integrity are vital to maintaining a safe and reliable pipeline system.

Pipeline Integrity

Inspections, verification and capital improvement programs are in place to monitor, assess and extend the lifespan of our pipelines and facilities, and to ensure the safety of the general public.

We manage several programs to assess the conditions and operations of our pipeline systems including:

  1. Watercourse / Right of Way Aerial Surveys are specialized annual surveys conducted to monitor the condition of all pipeline watercourse crossings as well as, pipeline right of way conditions.
  2. Cathodic Protection Surveys and Monitoring are conducted throughout the pipeline systems to ensure that cathodic protection systems are operating and protecting the pipelines as intended.
  3. External Coating Direct Assessment (ECDA) Surveys are conducted on specific pipelines to assess coating conditions, anomalies and cathodic protection system performance.
  4. Inline Inspection Surveys are utilized to inspect and assess the pipe wall integrity.
  5. Pipeline Dig Programs are conducted as follow up to the various survey assessments.
  6. Pipeline Capital Improvements are recommended to allow for pipeline integrity inspections, assessments and /or cathodic protection.

Each pipeline survey, inspection and assessment is intended to be proactive, as we monitor and maintain our pipeline systems to meet all code and regulatory requirements. In some cases pipelines and/or pipeline facilities are replaced as a result of pipeline surveys, inspections and assessments.

Measurement Integrity

Accurate and timely measurement data is critical for ATCO Pipelines to meet customer service expectations.

ATCO Pipelines Measurement Integrity programs improve the quality and accuracy of measurement data, reduce the number and magnitude of measurement errors and identify and mitigate sources of Unaccounted For Gas.

Practices include:

  1. Developing and maintaining measurement integrity policies and procedures and work instructions.
  2. Coordinating an annual inspection of meter locations in the AP system to ensure field equipment is accurately accounted for in our measurement system.
  3. Coordinating annual inspections of third-party owned and operated measurement facilities.
  4. Coordinating measurement trouble calls to ensure measurement issues are tracked and resolved in a timely manner.
  5. Analyzing measurement data in order to resolve measurement errors or metering problems.
  6. Coordinating an annual review of measurement processes to ensure they are documented accurately and that measurement risks are identified for future corrective action.
  7. Recommending measurement capital improvements based on the results of annual measurement verifications and investigations.
