On January 17, 2014, ATCO Pipelines received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission to proceed with the Urban Pipeline Replacement (UPR) Program. Over the next five years, the program will see ATCO Pipelines replace and relocate its vintage high-pressure natural gas pipelines in Calgary and Edmonton into the Transportation Utility Corridors (TUCs) surrounding both cities. The UPR Program will improve public safety, modernize the natural gas network and add the capacity needed to meet growing demand for natural gas. The existing pipelines will either be removed from service or transferred to ATCO Gas to be used for natural gas distribution service at much lower pressures. ATCO Gas will also be constructing several new low pressure lines and gate stations, mostly in and around the TUCs, to connect its system to ATCO Pipelines' new infrastructure. Public input has been a critical component of the UPR Program. ATCO Pipelines and ATCO Gas look forward to continuing to engage communities, customers and government representatives as we proceed with implementing the various components of the UPR Program.
